THE WIND PROJECTS OF EIE

    1. Evaluation of Wind Energy Potential

    In our country wind data collected by state meteorological organisation together with the general purposed records. Preparation of nation - wide planning depending on new and renewable energy resources and assessment of possibilities of utilisation is possible with identifying potential of new and renewable energy resources. In this purpose EIE started a study. In this study, EIE evaluated natural wind energy potential over the country using DMI‘s monthly wind speed and directions.

    The second phase of this study depends on measurements at locations determined to be promising in wind energy in the first phase. For this purpose, automated wind data acquisition stations have been installed in the different periods. At present, data collection has been going on. Measurements are taken at l0 m height above the ground. EIE's data are sold to the related firms.

    The wind data measurements of EIE showed that some locations of Turkey have high wind energy potential . These results have encouraged private firms to attempt installing wind power plants. Now there are some application for feasibility studies to establish wind power plant within the framework of BOT and BO to MENR.

    As of September 1997 total installed capacity of applications to the MENR is about 700 MW. Companies state their intention to increase the capacity gradually up to 1380 MW depending on the implementation of initial investment. Evaluation studies of these applications has been going on

    2. The Project of Electricity Generation from the Wind Energy

    EIE initiated a project to investigate the manufacturing and operating problems of a wind conversion system in l983. The installed system has a rated capacity of 1.1 kW and is installed at New Energy Resources Park of EIE. The system consists of l7 m high cage type steel tower, Darrieus type, and 3 bladed vertical aniseed turbine Only the turbine has been imported.

    3. Water Pumping Systems by the Wind Energy

    EIE has two small wind water pumping system.

    The mechanical wind energy pumping system, with 6 bladed, placed on top of a 6 m high guy wired steed pipe, are used to pump the water by a suction-pression pump form maximum 7m depth to 5 m height. The systems can start pumping at the wind speed of 3m/s.

    In addition, a new water pumping system was designed and manufactured by EIE, This l6 bladed turbine with 2m rotor diameter, l00 mm piston diameter, 32 mm stroke and 4m pumping height can pump 5.3 m3/day water at 3 m/sn wind velocity.

    4. EIE ; EWEA-TS Feasibility Project

    Turkish Wind Energy Association and EIE have started a feasibility study on a location to be determined at west part of Turkey in order to encourage utilisation of wind energy and to define a methodology for system design. For this purpose, EWEA-TS has signed a joint Venture Agreement with EIE; half of the total budget of This project will be financed by the EIB under the METAP program.

    5. Project on Preparing Wind Atlas of Turkey

    Turkish Wind Energy Association plans a new project on preparation of wind atlas of Turkey This project will be carried out jointly by state meteorological service (DMI) General Directorate of Electrical Power Resources Survey and Development Administration (EIE) and Bilkent University Communication and Spectrum Management Research centre (ISYAM).

    The primary objectives of this project

    • To establish reference for the central, regional and local authority in wind energy planning.
    • To define the areas where wind energy can make an economic contribution.
    • To provide a reliable picture of the overall and general distribution of the wind resources in Turkey.
